Welcome to the first edition of the Freelancer Files! This is where I’ll be sharing industry news and feature stories on all things freelance.

Upwork RSS Feeds Discontinued

It’s been an eventful few days for fans of the popular freelancing platforms Upwork and Fiverr. On August 20th, Upwork officially discontinued RSS feeds. Historically, both freelancers and SaaS companies relied on these feeds to receive real-time updates on job postings off-platform. Judging by the tweets surrounding this decision, the update seems largely unpopular with the Upwork community. Nevertheless, professional freelancers remain undeterred. You can read more about this update and the reaction from $2M Upworker Adam Palmer here.

Upwork Job Success Score Secrets Revealed

In other Upwork news, the long-guarded secret equation behind the Job Success Score (JSS) has finally been revealed.

For the uninitiated, the Job Success Score (JSS) on Upwork is a performance metric that reflects a freelancer’s overall success on the platform. It is a percentage score ranging from 0% to 100%.

This week, for the first time ever, Upwork disclosed the various factors and how they’re weighted in calculating a freelancer’s Job Success Score. Read about these factors now on Freelancer Files.

Fiverr Adds Upwork-Inspired Professions Catalog

Finally, not to be outdone in the headline-making department, Fiverr recently announced a new platform feature that’s sure to shake things up: Fiverr Professions.

Like Upwork’s professional profiles, Fiverr freelancers can now boost their reach through individual profiles, targeting higher-value clients looking for more depth in their freelancer hires.

Rather than selling “blog writing,” freelancers can now reach clients as “content marketers” or “full-stack marketers.” A web developer can offer services under a “front-end developer” umbrella instead of just a “UX designer.”

The new feature, currently invite-only, closely resembles Upwork Freelancer Profiles. Get your first look at the new professions catalog here and learn how to set up your own.
